Sioux Falls multi-use recreation trail expanding thanks to $1.3 million donation through Parks Foundation

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota – Two generous donors have come together to help expand the City of Sioux Falls recreation trail to connect Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue.

The $1.3 million donation will help fund a 1-mile expansion of the recreation trail in northeastern Sioux Falls on the north side of the Big Sioux River. The new trail is made possible through generous donors Jeff and Tammie Broin and the Ashby family.

“We are so grateful to the Broin and Ashby families for their generosity and vision,” said Jenny Kirby, chair of the Sioux Falls Parks Foundation. “Because of people like them, we are able to continue to make Sioux Falls a beautiful place to call home.”

The Sioux Falls Parks Foundation, an affiliate of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, seeks to align philanthropic investment in the city parks system with community vision.

“This section of the path helps bring recreational opportunities to more people in northeastern Sioux Falls and is a priority trail corridor in the Sioux Falls Bicycle Master Plan,” said Don Kearney, director of parks and recreation for the City of Sioux Falls. “We are so grateful to the Ashby and Broin families for their generosity.”

The new section includes a 1-mile addition, extending the current trail from Lien Park to Bahnson Avenue and includes an elevated boardwalk area. The project is scheduled to begin construction in the spring of 2025.

“We want people to continue to enjoy all the beauty that Sioux Falls has to offer – and our recreational trail is a perfect place to do that,” said Jeff Broin. “We are grateful to work with the Ashby family and the Parks Foundation.”
